A trial has finally started for a man accused of killing a 24-year-old bicyclist on September 18, 2015. The bicyclist died from a head injury that was sustained during the accident when he was struck by a pickup truck. Eyewitnesses to the crash say that the vehicle didn’t even appear to slow down at the time of the collision or after it happened, although they did note that the vehicle seemed to be traveling about the speed limit.
It took four months after the accident for a tip to come in that led to the defendant as a suspect in the hit-and-run accident. A billboard was put up, and a passerby called in believing that they knew who was involved. Once he was brought in by police, the suspect admitted during questioning that he was driving the suspected vehicle seen on video surveillance at the time it occurred. He claimed that he was unaware of what he hit, and was scared after it happened so he continued driving away.
The defendant’s charges include creating an accident that caused a death, not being properly licensed at the time of the crash, using a vehicle with a revoked or suspended driver’s license, operating a truck that was unregistered and not having the required financial responsibility on the truck at the time of the accident.
No matter the outcome of this trial, the bicyclist’s family will be devastated forever.
