Uber Feature Combats Drowsy Drivers

Uber has quickly become one of the most popular ways to hitch a ride. With a convenient and user-friendly app and tons of available drivers at almost any time of day, it has become a much-needed convenience for those in need of a ride.

Uber is not only popular with users and customers, but with employees as well, as the company provides many people with a secure source of income. Some Uber drivers use it as a way to supplement their pay from a regular day job while others use it as their main source of income entirely.

Although Uber seems to have a solid reputation with many users and its employees, it does not mean that they are exempt from the same problems motorists face on the road every day. From distracted driving to driving under the influence and driving drowsy, there are a number of situations that can (and have) lead to accidents while on the road.

Uber Promotes New Feature That Targets Drowsy Driving

Uber is completely aware of these hazards and recently announced a new feature that targets drowsy driving. In an effort to keep both drivers and passengers safe, Uber has implemented a mandatory six-hour driver break for every 12 hours of driving time.

This means that an Uber driver who has been accepting rides has a maximum limit of 12 hours driving time before the app keeps them from accepting more rides. Notifications after 10 hours of driving let drivers know they are approaching the limit. Once they hit 12 hours, their shift will automatically end.

The only way to reset the clock is to complete the uninterrupted six-hour break. This new feature will roll out across all markets in the United States and should provide passengers with peace of mind when it comes to the condition of their drivers.

Drowsy Driving is Just As Dangerous as Drunk or Distracted Driving

Drowsy driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving or distracted driving, and unfortunately, it is just as common. Accidents that occur as a result can lead to catastrophic injuries and can even be fatal. Uber’s new feature is a good first step in helping combat the problem.
